Sourcing Policy and Provenance

Channel Fisheries has developed its sourcing policy over its 25 year trading history. Through our business contacts and by close liaison with the local fishermen Channel Fisheries constantly monitor industry trends and endeavour to operate to the highest industry practices as set out below:

  • Wild caught fish is sourced from stocks managed responsibly in accordance with FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fishing and harvested at sustainable levels which pose no threat to the reproductive capacity of the stock;
  • Sourcing from stocks where either the biomass or harvesting level pose a threat to the integrity of the stock is avoided;
  • Sourcing from fisheries where problems with illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing are known is avoided;
  • Farmed fish is sourced from well managed farms that farm to high environmental standards which are fully incorporated into an environmental management system such as ISO 14001 and source their feed from sustainable sources. Organic farmed fish and prawn are preferable as this certification demonstrates a higher level of environmental responsibility;
  • Farmed fish is fully traceable to production site and all such sites are subject to annual audit by an independent body, such as Food Certification Scotland;
  • Both wild and farmed fish is purchased from sources operating within and fully compliant with legal management frameworks and is fully traceable.
